It is London's most prominent private rental marketplace created to connect homeowners having available accommodation with visitors to the capital for major sports and other events. Founder Matt Parker, having a fascination of all things Australian from his post-grad backpacking days in 2001 took inspiration from the Sydney 2000 Olympics when homeowners rented out their private houses to help accommodate the surge of visitors to the city from around the world. In 2005 when London won the Olympic bid for 2012 the media recognised and reported the problem which will arise in housing millions of visitors that will flood into London and hotel rooms will be scarce and priced at a premium. Matt set about creating a site that would give homeowners with available accommodation within convenient access to London an opportunity to earn money from a private rental and visitors a secure and comfortable alternative to expensive hotel rooms. The site opened to the public in December 2007.

We are amazed and excited at the response to the site and the entrepreneurial spirit shown by the public as the opportunities for both homeowners and visitors are recognised. A huge range of properties in and around London are available for rental and the site is now in full swing as we monitor the interaction and exchanges between visitors and homeowners. Activity has grown to such an extent that a sister site www.sporteventsrentmyhouse.com was created in 2009 to cover the potential market in global sport events. This site has already delivered private accommodation for various global events as diverse as the Winter Olympics in Canada, the Superbowl and Football World Cup in South Africa.

It is now "all hands on deck" to manage the surge in site traffic due to the London 2012 Olympic Games. In particular we are not only monitoring visitors messaging homeowners but also following global media representatives and elite sport Olympians and their families as they search for accommodation through londonrentmyhouse.com. These include French Radio journalists and recently members of a Spanish triathlon team, Australian rowing team and elite Canadian diver amongst other competitors are in touch with London homeowners.

Although the site is intended to offer opportunitites for homeowners and visitors during any major London event, such as Wimbledon, Notting Hill Carnival, rugby 6 nations etc.. most of the adverts are for London 2012 Olympics. Due to the level of interest shown in the project in the U.S.A it has been decided to extend the opportunities to New York homeowners. www.newyorkrentmyhouse.com is now live and ready to take adverts for major New York events. Feedback suggests a house swap facility should be included and we are planning to incorporate this, information will follow soon about this. Further down the line we are weighing up further expansion options and to build on the idea and continued success of londonrentmyhouse.com.
